Equipment from left to right: ARP Odyssey (with manuals- err, scores on it), Yamaha CS70M, chair with cat, chair without artist. On the right, top down: Yamaha CS30, Fostex VF-16, Yamaha Sy-77, Samson PL2404.

An great , great analog step sequencer. I can even sync the step sequencer of the CS-70M with it. Here's the solution: you can connect the Mobius 'accent' with the CS-70M sequencer plug. By putting an accent on the first note (or whereever) the sequencer starts to play. Of course you have to fine-tune the sequences.

The Fostex VF-16 is a harddisk recorder with 16 + 8 channels. I bought it because because recording with computers is a frustrating experience. They are noisy and simply getting my hands on a mouse while playing makes me feel bad :-). Though the VF16 is in fact also a computer, it's interface resembles a small studio and is optimised to make recordings fast and easy.

Another advantage is that you can still export audio to a computer via SCSI devices. While I use it mainly to backup, one can manipulate the wave files in some audio program and re-import to the Fostex.

But beware: get the update to version 3.12 of the software in the VF-16 community. If you don't your Fostex will have problems to export to SCSI (see the discussion in the community).

My workhorse.

It's heavy, it's got memory, it's great. What more can you wish for?

I know what you are thinking: MIDI.

Well, I didn't make my mind up wether or not, I should buy a MidiJack which means that I have to solder something into it. Beside the question if I destroy it by doing that, I am not sure if I want to lose the necessity to either program the step sequencer or play it by hands.

Well, there are some people (especially at centralharmony) who think that the C70M sucks compared to the CS80. This may be true - but still it's a great sounding synthesizer. I don't think that there are too many people having a CS70M and an CS80 standing side be side beside the fire and really can tell the difference. My recordings prove that it is able to provide at least one of Vangelis main lead sounds that is especially heard on the Blade Runner Soundtrack.

The popularity of the ARP Odyssey is only topped be the success of the Minimoog. Consequently there are many ressources on the internet.

Odyssey One of THE synthesizers, apart from the Mini Moog.

Citation: "From the weird to the wonderful, cool sounds are a breeze with this one." The internal step sequencer can only be clock synced if you perform this patch here.

CS30 The interface is strange, but the possibilities leave most of the other devices behind.

It can be found at VintageSynth though I do not consider this thing a vintage synthesizer (this depends on wether you think that the DX7 is vintage). I need it because now and then I need some digital aspect.

SY77 Sometimes I need it.

vintage
- a Yamaha CS-80 ... just to have it.
- a Mini Moog ... for the same reason.

not so vintage
- a K-Station (sample), though there is a risk it makes part of my equipment obsolete (just kidding). Review is here.
- E-Drums! I have a very good friend being a very good drummer - but I don't like to mess with microphones any more. But these things come with a price I couldn't afford. I recently

other
- Fatar MP-17 (bass pedals), unfortunately much too expensive. But I still live with the dream that I can perform my music live, and I need a few more arms for that. (Update: now I have a Fatar MP-12 - didn't use it until now :-)
